Since January 1, 2007, the law has established the principle of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for clothing, household linen, and footwear sold in France. It requires marketers to contribute to the end-of-life management of the products they placed on the market for consumers.
EPR is based on the "polluter pays" principle: companies, i.e., those responsible for placing certain products on the French market, are responsible for the entire life cycle of these products, from design to end of life.
EPR transfers all or part of the waste management costs to the "marketers" (importers, distributors, manufacturers, marketplaces).
To fulfill their obligations, marketers can choose to contribute by joining an eco-organization to which they entrust this responsibility, or to set up their own individual system.
